The Area's project idea aroused with the purpose to solve BAN current problems. These problems included a significant amount of resource waste and lack of coordination among departments. For instance, dispatchers who were responsible for 20-30 trains in their assigned territory most of the times were able to only focus on 5-7 trains, treating the rest of the trains with less attention. In addition, dispatchers were on their own and there was no cooperation among them since they could only see information about their territory and not others.For dispatchers, there was no way to see the whole stricture of the current situation, so poor decisions about scheduled maintenance-of-way (MOW) crews were being made. Communications with trains and MOW vehicles was poor, current information about railroad operations were difficult to obtain and sometimes the information was erroneous. Certainly, ARES will improve operations in BAN but the top management specifically the CEO of BAN and top manage ment is not completely convinced to carry out the project. ARES is a very large and costly project and they need to be sure that the benefits are realistic.Moreover, they want to make sure that BAN will obtain a return after investing $350 lions on the project and also there is the question on whether the investment could turn out to be more. Another issue is related with the organizational structure according with the chief operating officer the new technology alone will not benefit the company but the restructuring of the entire company and many operations as well (Cash, p. 25). For all those reasons they want to consider other cheaper alternatives before making this important decision.Industry Competitive Analysis -? Porters Five forces Treat of new Entrants: Given that the railroad industry requires a heavy initial investment the treat of new entrants is low. However, effects of deregulation on both the trucking and railroad industries were changing the competitive environment i n transportation (Cash, p. 62). Trucking companies needed a lower initial investment to enter and they Were gaining advantage Over railroad companies since they were providing door-to-door delivery service which was being preferred by customers in order to meet the just-in-time production.Treat of Substitutes products: For BAN its largest source of revenue was coal (Cash, p. 62), and its major competitor was the Union Pacific UP), which was another railroad company that had recently invested in a new technology. Heehaw commodities like coal and grain would normally be transported by train which put BAN in a position where it was difficult for customer to switch but when it comes to transport light products trucks were moving ahead by providing faster service that customers were willing to pay.Bargaining power of Buyers: The railroad industry had a few companies providing the service to the customers, but it was facing two major challenges which were better service and capital intens ity (Cash, p. 68). This was making the trucking industry stronger since customers were looking for a faster service and they were able to provide it. Bargaining Power of Suppliers: Farmers and other big corporations were Ban's suppliers. For suppliers providing light products like agricultural and food products they had the alternative to switch to the trucking companies, but for the ones providing yeah. Products like coal and automotive products they didn't have to much bargaining power since railroad companies were the best way for transporting these. Industry Rivalry: The number one competitor is the Union Pacific (LCP) and they were also investing to be more efficient (Cash, p. 4). Certainly, the trucking industry was becoming a strong competitor for BAN as well, since the costs in the trucking industry were going down due to the effects of deregulation and they were providing more flexibility for customers.Generic Strategy BAN currently is following the cost leadership strategy by using economies of scale to transport high volumes of commodities to its customers. Coal was the number one source of revenue and BAN had long term contract customers (Cash, p. 4). The second largest source of revenue was agricultural modesties and BAN was expecting to grow in this segment given recent changes in economic policies in Eastern Europe.To satisfy the expected increase in demand for this type of products BAN will need to become even more efficient to keep its cost leadership strategy, maintain its current customers and gain potential new customers in the future. Organizational Structure Burlington Northern is structured in a functional form, where similar knowledge, tasks and skills are being grouped together. This is because the functional form promotes economies of scale (Cash, p. 35). For instance chapters are in charge of controlled the trains and each of them were assigned to a region and they Were only responsible for that region.They also schedule maintenance with the MOW crews. Other operations were divided by function as well, such as control systems and communications, maintenance, and freight car management and each of these departments were reporting to the operations manager assigned to that department. The idea behind this form is to create a rational system to operate in as efficient as possible (Morgan, p. 22). However, the question was whether after implementing ARES this form would still be suitable; the new system might suggest an organizational structural change.Stakeholders Top management: This group has the responsibility of keeping the company running, which means that the BAN must continue making profit in order to maximize the company's value. F-or this reason they have to make sure that an investment of this magnitude is justifiable and that in the long run will provide the identified benefits. Employees: This group will be affected directly by the ARES project, the whole business process is going to change and they il l have to adapt to the new system.The advantage is that this new system promise to be more efficient and safe which can make their jobs easier but on the other hand some people might lose their job or since ARES is supposed to automate a lot of processes currently being made by them. Customers: ARES is going to improve the scheduling of trains which ultimately will provide a faster and more reliable service to its customers. However, in order to still be profitable after ARES implementation, BAN might increase the price for the service and customers which will affect customers.Solutions: One solution for BAN could be to implement the entire ARES system in a geographic region first. With this solution the top management could analyze the benefits in reality before doing a whole implementation of the system which is riskier. Another solution could be to not do any implementation for now and wait and see how other railroad companies adapt to new emerging technologies, by doing this BAN would take an adapter position which would still keep them competitive regarding technological development but with less risk.Adaptive companies use information technology at a level close to their competitors (Friedman, p. 72). But this solution affects the customers that are demanding faster delivery necessary for the recent trend of KIT manufacturing who might end up switching to trucking companies, which ultimately affects BAN because by the time they finally implement a system to improve the delivery to customers, they will have lost a lot of potential customers. The best solution and recommendation for BAN is to do a whole implementation of ARES despite its high cost.Without a question, the environment is changing and BAN must adapt and stop using old technology if they want to continue being in business. BAN is a very large company that eels with complex business processes everyday thus in order for them to survive and keep growing they should be aggressive and be the leader in the industry having the most advanced technology. ARES will automate a lot of processes in a more efficient Way minimizing human errors which ultimately will reduce labor cost by eliminating unnecessary manpower.ARES will also improve the scheduling of trains which will eradicate the meet and passes problem one of Ban's biggest challenge. Clearly, the poor utilization of Ban's assets (bad scheduling and waste of resources) is creating bottlenecks which s preventing them from making more profit and meet the market demand. One important message revealed in the book ‘The Goal† is that companies should balance the flow with the demand from the market (Goldwater, p. 139). The demand is growing national and is expected to grow more even in the international arena in the future.ARES will optimize the whole system of BAN which in the long run will generate high revenues because they will be able to meet the market demand. However, the implementation Of ARES will affect the e ntire company and operations and many organization changes will be required. Companies in order to survive must embrace change and successful adaptation of organization to environment depends on the ability of top management to interpret conditions facing the firm in an appropriate manner to adapt relevant course of action. Morgan, p. 47). In order to take advantage of all ARES features and benefits BAN they should also switch to use a matrix organizational structure. The fully developed matrix is team driven, in that priority is given to business, program, product, or project areas, with functional specialist providing support, where the focus is on end product or revere encouraging a flexible, innovative, and adaptive behavior (Morgan, p. 51 Matrix organizational structure is the best choice for a growing and complex company like BAN.

Meaning of Addiction Addiction is the continued use of a mood altering substance or behavior despite adverse dependency consequences, or a neurological impairment leading to such behaviors. Classic hallmarks of addiction include impaired control over substances or behavior, preoccupation with substance or behavior, continued use despite consequences, and denial. Occasional rest or alternate task breaks are helpful to combat fatigue and stress. They provide an opportunity to incorporate different and less visually demanding tasks into the work regimen. Specific rest or task breaks should be based on the individual visual needs of the operator. 3b. Peer Influence Peer pressure is the influence exerted by a peer group or an individual, encouraging other individuals to change their attitudes, values, or behaviors in order to conform to group norms. Social groups affected include membership groups, in which individuals are â€Å"formally† members (such as political parties and trade unions), or social cliques in which membership is not clearly defined. A person affected by peer pressure may or may not want to belong to these groups. They may also recognize dissociative groups with which they would not wish to associate, and thus they behave adversely concerning that group’s behaviors. Peer pressure is most commonly associated with youth, in part because most youth spend large amounts of time in schools and other fixed groups that they do not choose and are seen as lacking the maturity to handle pressure from friends. Also, young people are more willing to behave negatively towards those who are not members of their own peer groups. Peer pressure can also have positive effects when people are pressured toward positive behavior, such as volunteering for charity or excelling in academics or athletics, by their peers. This is most commonly seen in youths who are active in sports or other extracurricular activities where conformity with one’s peer group is strongest. Don’t focus on computer games, play sports DOTA takes away the healthy physical activity from the basketball games or team sports that the youth is driven away from. It’s a theft that creates a diversion from sports and negatively diverts real sports that is, from taking place. To reduce the growing population of obese children in the world the parents need to encourage sports and outside play over video games. Kids in the world today know little about sports and the rules. But spend more time playing video games then outside being active. What happened to neighborhood hide and seek, or pick-up basketball games with other neighborhood kids. Today children are more interested in video games, computers and television, and parents are afraid of letting their children run around the streets because of kidnappings. When I was a kid I had video games but I spent most of my time outside playing. Being outside with the fresh air and the sunshine was the best thing for me. In this year today there are a lot of kids who don’t know how to play sports or are too obese to play sports. Take basketball for instants I personally think it’s one of the easiest sports besides football. The rules are simple in basketball, dribble the ball one hand at a time, and don’t carry the ball. Also in basketball it’s up to you and your team to score as many points as you can. But in the game of basketball like any other sport you have to work as a team. One of the major benefits you get from playing sports understands how to work really good with other people. In my mind TEAM means Together Everyone Achieves More, which means if you try to do everything by yourself you won’t get very far. Video games don’t teach you how to work with others. Also most of the video games today prompt violence and use profanity. The majority of kids are no longer interested in physical activity. There are a certain percentage of kids today that are addicted to video games. I believe that at a youth age kids shouldn’t be addicted to anything. Video games in today’s society have a negative influence on kids because it separates them from reality. We no longer live in a society where kids run around actively throughout the neighborhood. Late night soccer games, pickup games in the park, and innocence children are gone in sports. Today children are more interested in video game, computers and television, and parents are afraid of letting their children run around the streets because of kidnapping. The majority of kids are no longer interested in physical activity. Why do most kids enjoy video games rather than sports? Video games were first introduced in the 70’s and have been gaining popularity ever since. By the end of the decade video games had already become a preferred activity for kids. According to a recent study by Harris Interactive 1,178 children in the U.S, almost 9 percent of children gamers are pathologically or clinically â€Å"addicted to video games. However, 23 percent of youth say that they have felt â€Å"addicted to video games,† with about one-third of males and a little more than one in 10 females reporting the sensation. 4b. Focus on reading books Anyone who has played video games, or has watched someone playing video games, can easily see the level of focus required, and the endless hours a gamer spends very much interacting with this form of entertainment. Why? What is it about this medium that keeps kids glued to it in a way few things can? Hour after hour. And what do they say when they finish? That game was too short. The key thing is that video games are goal oriented. You set out to achieve something. And you know what that goal is from the off. Give the player a clear aim, make it difficult to achieve, let them go. That’s all it takes to get them hooked. Yes, flashy visuals and cool kill cams can make fan boys’ hearts flutter. But some of the most popular games are the most simple, from Pacman to Tetris to Angry Birds. These aren’t just useful questions to ask if you’re writing children’s books, or thrillers, they apply in some degree to any narrative structure. Learning how to build scenes so the reader is ever more interested and more invested in reaching the end is a delicate balancing act. If it’s too easy and predictable, they will get bored. You can find any type of information on any subject with the help of the search engines like Yahoo and Google. 2. Communication. The primary goal of the Internet is communication. It has done extremely well in this field, however the development process is still going on to make it more dependable and quick. By sending an e-mail, we can contact a person who is physically present thousand miles away within the fraction of a second’s time. 3. Entertainment. Internet functions as a popular medium of entertainment. A wide variety of entertainment including video games, music, movies, chat room, news and others can be accessed through the Internet. 4. E-commerce. E-commerce is the idea that is implemented for any form of commercial strategy or business transactions that entails transmission of data from one corner of the world to another. E-commerce has become a fantastic option through which you can shop anything. Formation of communities Internet helps in formation of communities or forums. Here a number of people can participate in different types of debates and discussions, express their views and gather valuable knowledge. 6. Services. Virus is a program that interrupts the usual operation of your personal computer system. We can keep in contact with our relatives or friends who live far away. 2. We can know what happens in our surroundings. 3. It can create fun and its rapidity of learning knowledge. 4. It can use as love attraction. Disadvantages 1. Waste of life! 2. Ruining your professional life. 3. It can create intrigues, fights etc. 4. It can lessen the dignity of a person. 6. Recommendation 6a. For problematic parents 1. Limit Internet access to public areas at least for certain times of the day and avoid having televisions and computer games in bedrooms. 2. Plan screen time, whether television or Internet use. For television, those are easy in the era of DVRs. Sit and watch a show you like then stop watching. For the Internet, which is more free-flowing, use an egg timer? Do the same for video games. Stress to children that they shouldn’t put anything on the Internet that they wouldn’t want on the home page of Google, YouTube, ESPN, StLtoday. com, etc. (Nothing on the Internet is truly private. ) 4. The Sex Ratios Of India Indias growth story has been incredible. The stock markets are doing well. Corporate India is optimistic about India being able to sustain the current growth rate for a considerable period of time. Indian companies are making their presence felt through cross-border mergers and acquisitions. Services and manufacturing sectors are booming. Growth in agriculture may be sluggish as compared to the other sectors, it growing nonetheless. Urban India believes that India is going to surpass the United States of America in a span of fifteen years. However, fundamental problems like malnutrition and corruption still plague our country. But the urban, educated, middle class are not affected by malnutrition and have learnt to live with corruption. There is one problem besides corruption and malnutrition; which is prevalent across all sections of the society and all of them all guilty participants in making this problem a widespread one. The urban, educated, middle class; despite being educated, do not seem to realise the long term effects of their actions. This problem, if unchecked, has the potential to apply the brakes on Indias growth. The birth of a boy child is celebrated, while the birth of a girl child is, well; tolerated. And sometimes, the girl child is killed even before she is born. Sex ratio is the number females in a geographic region per 1000 males. Most developed economies of the world (except China) have healthy sex ratios, with more number of females than males 1. A sex ratio 952 females per 1000 males is considered healthy. The national average as per the 2001 census is 933. Delhi has a modest 915 according estimates in the year 2009 2. As per the 2001 census, Rajasthan averages 922, while Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh average 964 and 978 respectively. Kerala being the most literate state also has the healthiest sex ratio of 1058 per 1000 males 3. However states like Punjab has a dismal sex ratio of 795 per 1000 males, which is alarming 4. The state of Maharashtra too is a cause for concern. With more working women being visible in Maharashtra, there is a misconception that Maharashtra is better off, but facts state otherwise. The juvenile sex ratio is 869 girls to 1000 boys, as on March 2010 11. If India has to continue on the growth path, the burgeoning menace of female foeticide cannot be ignored. But is the common man on the road concerned? No. Why? For one, the common man believes that it is not his problem; but of the feminists, the NGOs, the government, and so on. For another, he believes that the problem is societal, not personal; and hence it cannot affect him. (The common man I am talking about is a reference to the numerous people I have met so far in my life. Gender imbalance is the least of their problems.) Is the problem societal? Crime against women is on the rise and the increasing imbalance between males and females will aggravate it 5. A survey conducted by Jagori, based in Delhi concluded that women face harassment in public places on a continuous basis 6. Since most of the cases of harassment go unreported, the awareness of the magnitude of the menace is abysmally low. An article written by Kalpana Sharma, No girls please, were Indian, (The Hindu, 29 August 2004) calls this problem an epidemic with huge social costs associated with it. My understanding of the articles I have referred to is that gender imbalance would lead to an increase in restlessness among men. Women would become easy targets to vent their frustration. Is the problem personal? We Indians have developed a very wrong mindset. Unless a problem affects us personally, we do not seem to bother. Should women care? Women craving for sons, who have never faced harassment should realise that even they can be vulnerable. Should men care? States like Punjab and Haryana are facing a very grave situation. Due to their heavily skewed sex ratios, there are not enough brides for the grooms within the community. A study notes that 20% men may remain unmarried 6. Another study notes that marriage has beneficial effects on health and survival, with men reaping maximum benefits. Therefore, men run the risk of shorter life expectancy 7. Why is that we do not want daughters? Daughters have always been considered as paraya dhan. Parents consider having a daughter as an expense, a luxury they cannot afford. Taking care of her, educating her, and marrying her off to a suitor, all require huge sums of money. Any property she inherits or assets that she creates go the family she marries into. Families who own large pieces of land have owned such lands for generations. Such families would always want their first child to be male for the purpose of inheritance and keeping the land within the family. Even today marrying off a daughter is considered the biggest responsibility a parent can possibly have. Fears for her sexual safety and security make parents to marry off their daughter as early as possible. Why is that we want sons? The answer is dowry. Though the practice of dowry is made illegal in 1961, it is an open secret that the practice is prevalent even in 2010. We have men in the south proudly telling each other that they have a market value in the marriage market 9. There are men among the rural folk who consider getting married simply to rake in dowry and use it to fund their businesses. Dowry in todays world has taken many convenient forms like a fully furnished apartment, high-end electronics, a four-wheeled vehicle, and huge sums of money. The trend of son preference cuts across socio-economic factors like caste and economic status 6. As a result, dowry related harassment is rising. Other than financial concerns, there are other benefits in having sons. India is a patrilineal society. Sons continue the family lineage (gotra), while daughters lose their gotra of birth and join the lineage of their husbands. This essentially means that sons are the only legitimate descendan ts in the system. Therefore, sons are a source of prestige for a family. As a consequence of these deep seated norms, girl children under the age of 5 face severe neglect in terms of nutrition, immunisation, and clothing. They also face discrimination with regard to schooling. Sometimes female infants are killed within a few days of their birth. With the advent of technology, the trend of sex selective abortion or female foeticide has risen to unprecedented levels. Thirty years ago, these methods were not known. The Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Regulation and Prevention of Misuse) Act (PNDT) Act prohibits doctors and clinics from using pre-natal diagnostic techniques, such as scans, to determine the sex of a foetus. First offenders would face a penalty of up to three years of imprisonment and a fine of 10,000 and repeat offenders would risk a five-year imprisonment and a 50,000 fine. The act also prohibits any advertising for diagnosis facilities. The act notwithstanding, the awareness of sex selective abortions were popularised with the mushrooming o f unregistered, illegal, small clinics by advertising the benefits of sex selective abortions through messages like It is better to pay a small amount today for a sex-selective abortion than a larger amount later for your daughters dowry. The government, on its own, has not been effective in enforcing the act. The government has a myopic take on the issue. Since this issue cannot be treated as a plank to garner votes, the long term after effects of sustained gender imbalances on demography are not being considered seriously 10. All hope is not lost. Many NGOs have launched sting operations, such as luring doctors into revealing the sex of a foetus. While often receiving wide publicity, these initiatives are proving somewhat less effective for legal reasons, as proof of criminal wrongdoing is often difficult to establish. But they nonetheless have had an unmistakeable impact on clinic operators in some areas, who have come to realise that the Act can be implemented by non-official entities. Other than stings, NGOs have been also been instrumental in spreading awareness through campaigns like Save our daughters, Laadli 1 million signature campaign, FADA movement by Deepalaya, Jatha campaign by Jagruti, and recently, the programme Santulan by the Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan, to name a few. Actress Gul Panag has taken up the cause in Chandigarh and has partnered with a city based NGO called Samsher Singh Foundation to fight female foeticide 8. Notwithstanding these initiatives, at a personal level, we must spread awareness of the issue. A growing India not only needs to debate on fiscal deficit and current account deficits but also on the daughter deficit. The issue needs to be talked about more often to make it relevant all the time. Changing the mindsets of a billion people will not happen overnight. The youth and newly wed couples need to be sensitised about the issue. I advocate certain fundamental changes in the way we think to bring about the change. The urban, educated, middle class can be targeted first with these ideas. After there is a considerable change in the mindset of the middle class, these ideas can be trickled down to the grassroots. The primary problems of lineage, inheritance, and girls being treated as paraya dhan need to be addressed. The Hindu Succession (Amendment) Act, 2005 gives women equal rights of inheritance of land and property. This empowers the women economically and treats daughters as equal financial providers. Second, sons are no more providing for the parents during their old age. Sons are moving out of their ancestral homes, are staying away from their parents and are starting families of their own. Parents of sons are also not assured of constant personal care from their sons in their old age. Now in such a context, it does not matter if the parents have sons or daughters: they are going to stay away anyway due to a variety of reasons and they will be playing roughly equal roles when their parents need them. Third, the concept of a patrilineal society needs to be done away with. The very notion that a daughter would be part of another family after marriage should be erased. Daughters, not jus t sons, can also be considered as legitimate descendants. The children of the daughter need not be thought of as children of another family. In the United States of America, a child can take the surname of either parent. Though it is not a norm here in India, the government is not stopping us from doing so. Now with respect to dowry, young men need to be sensitised about the issue. They need to be told that the fact that they are proud to have a market value is detestable. They need to be taught that it is unethical to think of dowry as an opportunity for instant money. Traditionally, parents of the girl perform her wedding and bear all the expenses. This has to change. Parents of the boy should also shoulder the burden of performing the wedding and share the expenses with the parents of the girl; it is after all the wedding of their son, what is the shame in bearing the expenses of their own sons wedding? Better still, the boy and the girl should be made accountable for the expense s incurred. It their own wedding, why make their parents shoulder the entire responsibility for the expenditure? The fundamental assumptions which would make these changes work are that the urban, educated middle class are liberal in their mindsets, love their sons and daughters roughly equally, and have inflated egos. By hitting on their egos, by enquiring about their capability to fund their own sons wedding, these changes can be driven home. It would too naive to think that by making these changes, we would quickly achieve a healthier sex ratio. These changes are easier said than done, because they are too radical. Even the urban, educated, middle class would find it difficult to digest and assimilate these changes because the existing norms have been around for centuries. Small successes should be celebrated and propagated. It would take years for these changes to provide material results. Eventually, when these changes produce results, one cannot rest because these changes will still have to trickle down among the rural and poorer sections of the society. For India to be an economic superpower, all sections of the society should have a healthy sex ratio within their communities. It is a long and arduous journey ahead. Duty can be represented in a variety of ways throughout literature: patriotic duty, duty to your family, partner and yourself. All three authors present this theme to have destructive qualities for the relationships of the characters. Whilst Shakespeare argues that Antonys lacking sense of duty lead to his demise, Bronte and McEwen show that the characters strong sense of duty leads to their ultimate separation. In Shakespeares Antony and Cleopatra the main demonstration of destructive duty is shown in the character of Antony who is caught in a conflict between his duty to Rome as a soldier and his love and passion for Cleopatra. Whereas Cathy in Wuthering Heights is caught between her desire for social class and her desire for Heath cliff. On the other hand McEwens Atonement shows how Robbies patriotic duty separates him from his love Cecelia causing the destruction of Cecelia as a person. In his opening lines to Demetrius, Philo complains that The triple pillar of the world has transformed into a strumpets fool when Antony abandons Rome. This foreshadows future events when Antony leaves Rome to be with Cleopatra and engages in war with Rome choosing to fight by sea rather than land. Philos criticism of Antonys dotage, introduces a tension between reason and emotion that runs throughout the play. The theme of duty in Antony and Cleopatra puts a strain on their relationship as Antony has a duty to Rome and Caesar. Sophie Williams argues She has a lack of confidence in Antonys love for her and that She experiences irrational jealousy and reveals great insecurity because even though some critics may view her jealousy as being the actions of a controlling and manipulative woman and find it difficult to interpret aspects of her behaviour as those of a woman in love. Sophie Williams argues that she experiences the volatile and powerful emotions more characteristic of a young woman in love for the first time suggesting Cleopatra to be innocent, a contradiction of the common view taken by many audiences. This causes conflict between Antony and Cleopatra heightens as she becomes increasingly jealous along with their distance apart shown through her conversation with Charmain when she says That I might sleep out this great gap of time My Antony is away this suggests to the audience that she cannot bare to be apart from him. However this could also be perceived by other audiences as Cleopatras desperation in having a lack of control over Antony now that she is parted from him. Overall, this shows how although it appears as if Antony has chosen his duty to Rome above Cleopatra as on the sudden a roman thought hath struck him they are still deeply in love. Shakespeare uses this to demonstrate the destructive qualities of duty as Antony and Cleopatras relationship leads to there ultimate destruction through their deaths. Similarly to Antony and Cleopatra, McEwen uses the physical distance between Cecelia and Robbie created by the war to show the destructive qualities of duty. Tom Shone from the New York Times criticises that the young lovers follow the suit that English novelists stopped writing more than 30 years ago. McEwen shows this through the introduction of Bryonys cunning plot to get Robbie arrested, although he presents Cecilia and Robbies love affair as ongoing, ill wait for you was eternal. Meaning that if it was not for her lie the sequence of events prior to his death may not have happened and his duty to war would not have stopped their relationship from developing. Similarly to Antony in Antony and Cleopatra, in Wuthering Heights duty is also a theme that leads to the destruction of characters. Bronte introduces this through the character of Cathy as she experiences a conflict of emotions just like Antony, as Cathy marries Linton for his social status rather than love but her loyalty and her devoted passion is directed almost entirely towards Heathcliff. This is shown through desperation in trying to keep Heathcliff in her life as she announces well, if I cannot keep Heathcliff for my friend-if Edgar will be mean and jealous, ill try to break their hearts by breaking my own. That will be a prompt way of finishing all, when I am pushed to extremity this suggests to the audience the level of desperation she experiences in trying to keep Heathcliff in her life causes her to act irrationally. On the other hand some audiences many view her as trying to punish both men because she cannot obtain what she desires most. It can be argued that Instead of being compassionate and heroic, Heathcliff and Catherine are selfish and petty. This shows the destructive nature of duty as Cathys duty as her duty to Linton as his wife ensures that she cannot peruse a life with Heathcliff. Furthermore, when Antony marries Octavia to prove to Caesar that he is still loyal to Rome he is once again showing that at this point in the play his sense of duty out weighs his love and devotion towards Cleopatra. It also shows how duty compels people to do things which they would not choose to if they had a choice as Antony would not have gone to Rome and married Octavia. This shows the destruction duty has on characters because Antonys betrayal of Caesar ultimately leads to his destruction as it sparks a war between Rome and Antony where he makes the fatal mistake to fight by sea as he is heavy influenced by Cleopatra famous for her fleet of ships as even the winds are love-sick with her sails. However, as the play progresses Antonys loyalty and duty becomes greater for Cleopatra as he leaves Rome and Octavia behind to join Cleopatra in Egypt as Caesar describes him as being an obstruct between his lust and him this suggests that Antony has let his feelings towards Cleopatra effect his judgment and leads him to disregarding his duty as a soldier to Rome. Shakespeare presents this as an unusual act for Antony to do due to Caesars outrage as he believes he hath given his empire up to a whore this use of strong language shows Caesars level of disgust in Antonys actions showing how this was unusual to roman culture. This shows how duty is destructive as this event is a representation of a turning point in the play where Antony looses the respect of his soldiers, resulting in the abdication of Enobarbus. Similarly to Antony and Cleopatra Cathays marriage to Linton reflects the feeling of obligation rather than love. It has been suggested that Instead of being blissfully in love, Catherine marries someone else and breaks Heathcliffs heart. Too proud to tell each other their true feelings, they fight, storm and rage against each other, destroying themselves in the process. Bronte displays this through the imagery of nature where she describes her love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods and that Time will change it as she was well aware, as winter changes the trees my love for Heath cliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath a source of little visible delight, but necessary. The messengers are often used to introduce bad news as the nature of bad news infects the teller to Cleopatra and Antony such as when Antonys wife died and when Cleopatra learns of Antonys marriage to Octavia. The messengers often find themselves in the middle of a conflict as communicating this bad news results in them getting caught in the crossfire, leading them to a defensive outlook and constantly having to remind the emotional characters that I have done my duty. This shows how Shakespeare uses the messengers to show how the major characters conflict between duty and passion leads them to displaying outrageous act of emotions. Shakespeares presentation of duty shows a continuous conflict with love and passion which he uses essentially to create suspense and intrigue in the audiences mind as to the ongoing battle between the head and the heart which is used by many literary authors to this day. It can be argued that Antonys duty to Rome is a perfect demonstration of a persons moral obligation in conjunction with their wants and desires. Shakespeare shows in the play Antony and Cleopatra that Antonys heart; his love for Cleopatra clouded his judgment when it came to making decisions on how best to defeat Caesar. This was shown by Shakespeare through the use of minor characters such as Antonys fleet advising him that it would be more advantageous for Antony to fight by land. However, Antony allowed himself to be persuaded by his passion for Cleopatra which Shakespeare used to present the destructive nature of duty though his defeat in battle. Shakespeare shows Antonys increasing lack of duty towards Rome thro ugh the famous quote let Rome in tyber melt, and the wide arch of the ranged empire fall suggesting that Antonys prioritys have shifted from Rome to Egypt. However this dwindles in the next act when he worries about loosing himself in dotage. McEwen uses the repetition of physical windows to understand how confusion came to be a key theme within the novel as McEwens uses multi-narrative witch allows the reader to grasp the full extent of the story. McEwen uses this narration to show how duty can be destructive to characters because it allows the audience to see how bryonys mistake effects different characters from the individuals point of view in the novel through her lie she causes the newly in love Cecelia and Robbie to be separated. It also leads to the destruction of bryony herself as she is constantly trying to atone for her mistakes throughout her life and can never get the forgiveness she wanted from Robbie and Cecelia. Similarly to Antony and Cleopatra repetition is another tactic Bronte employs in organizing Wuthering Heights. However unlike Antony and Cleopatra, in Wuthering Heights, it seems that nothing ends in the world of this novel. Bronte creates the illusion of time running in cycles which she achieves through repetitive story lines, and the events of the past reoccurring in the present. Bronte introduces this through the use of the younger characters in the ways that the names of the characters are recycled organizing the novel into recurring parallels allowing the reader to make connections between the different generations. On the other hand, Shakespeare uses symbolism in referring to Antony as a cloud that changes shape as it tumbles across the sky, which reflects how Antony changes through the different acts of the play. Shakespeare shows Antonys changes through the changing shape of the clouds as sometimes we see a cloud as dragonish showing how he turns from a bear or lion, to a towered citadel, a pendent rock, suggesting that Antony can mock our eyes with air as Antony seems to change from the reputable conqueror into a debased victim. As he says to Eros, his uncharacteristic defeat, both on the battlefield and in matters of love, makes it difficult for him to hold this visible shape. In addition Antonys two attempts at battle with Caesar at sea, result in his navy being betrayed by the queens retreat which shows how Antony does not learn from his mistakes. It could be argued that if Cleopatra really loved Antony, she would not have accompanied him in the first place or she would have stood by him and realized the concequences of turning back. This demonstrates to the reader the destructive qualities of duty as although Antony has given up so much for Cleopatra; she still puts Egypt first when she realizes that Antony cannot win. this ultimately leads to the deaths of the two characters because in Antonys outrage he exclaims this foul Egyptian hath betrayed me calling her a triple-turned whore! which leads to her ordering Charmain to go tell him I have slain myself causing him to order Eros to draw his sword and kill him ultimately resulting in his own destruction. In addition, Shakespeare uses social status to demonstrate how powerful the conflict between duty and passion can be as the characters in Antony and Cleopatra are of a high status in society which Shakespeare displays through Enobarbus extravagant descriptions of the barge she sat in as being like a burnished throne that burned on the water with purple sales that were so perfumed that the winds were love-sick with them and yet they still allow themselves to be diminished though their lack of awareness when passion outweighs reason. The character of Antony appears, at first glance to be a powerful man as a leading member of the triumvirate as he was the triple pillar of the word. Shakespeare demonstrates the destructive quality of passion in contrast with duty as Antony was once a feared and respected solder with an air of authority which was diminished through his love affair with Cleopatra as a result of a combination of clouded decisions. In contrast to Antony and Cleopatra where there separation is a culmination of their mutual social status in both Wuthering Heights and Atonement it is the male characters lack of social status that results in the separation from the people they love. Bronte introduces this in Wuthering heights through Cathys considerable advance in social status over Heathcliff as she says that it would be degrading to me to marry Heathcliff now suggesting to the audience that at this time a persons social status was considerably more important than a persons happiness this was particularly prevalent in people of a higher social status as marrying as Cathys marriage to Heathcliff would simply never happen. Bronte uses this to show the destructive nature of duty as social status is used as a barrier. Similarly to Antony and Cleopatra Bronte uses the locations of thrush cross grange to represent Linton and Wuthering heights to represent heath cliff .The parallels of two warring houses, Wuthering Heights and Thrush cross Grange, represent opposing rfhth, worlds and values which further suggests to the audience the difficulty of Cathys choice due to the enormous differences between the two lifestyles. Bronte shows Cathys decision through the motif of a conflict between nature and culture shown in the descriptions of the two locations. In Wuthering heights this is represented through Cathy having to remain in thrush cross grange due to her marriage to Linton causing her to be separated from Heathcliff. This is also represented in atonement through Robbie being separated from Cecelia through his duty as a soldier and in Antony and Cleopatra Anthonys duty to Rome where each writer presents the failure of the characters who are in love in saving each other.
